Ruffwear K9 Float Coat dog life jacket review

The flotation pads are designed to support the dog in his natural position and will keep its face out of the water, even if it is tired. The RuffWear K-9 Float Coat is expensive but highly durable and can be washed by hand. The only real negative point is that the leash ring is made of plastic and some users reported that this feature was fragile.

Photo provided by Flickr We chose the Big Eddy Float Coat for Ellie as it very much suits her lifestyle. Lisa and her boyfriend are real outdoorsy people and do a lot of major treks and canoe trips and Ellie almost always goes with them. The Big Eddy dog PFD is intended for active dogs that will be in rough to fast-moving water.

The K-9 Float Coat from Ruffwear is the ultimate in canine flotation and water safety, designed for dogs of all shapes and sizes. This is a premium, full-featured life jacket that includes a strong handle, optimally positioned to lift dogs out of the water, and 3M Scotchlite reflective trim for enhanced visibility in or out of the water. We believe ensuring the best fit, while providing maximum mobility in the water, are the most vital features of a dog PFD because these two features allow the dog to swim unencumbered in a variety of conditions. Our float coats use the dog’s girth measurement to get the optimal fit for natural, unrestricted movement in the water, similar to a human Type III PFD that uses chest girth to size the appropriate Coast Guard-approved PFD.While the Coast Guard currently does not approve or rate any dog flotation devices on the market, Ruff Wear has applied years of research and development to our Float Coats. We’ve designed them to be the best dog life jackets available, modeling our sizing and flotation guidelines after those of Coast Guard-approved human personal flotation devices (PFD’s).Ruffwear K-9 Float Coat Tested and Reviewed
The ultimate doggie life jacket for any dog that gets out there on the water! Whether you canoe, kayak, raft, sail or SUP…you can now bring your pooch along and know that he’ll be safe regardless of how strong a swimmer (or not) he is!

and don't forget to check out our race reviews at Many factors determine how buoyant a dog PFD will be in the water, including altitude, salinity of the water, dog size and shape, and the natural buoyancy of the dog. So, sizing a dog PFD based on weight alone would be inadequate in determining whether a PFD will adequately float your dog. We do, however, use a body weight ratio to determine how much flotation to put in each size jacket. We tested our float coats for buoyancy and found they provide three (size XXS) to 20 (size XL) pounds of flotation, depending on the size. Here are the results of our testing. Note: Coast Guard approved human PFD’s generally provide 15.5 – 22 pounds of total flotation for a human adult over 90 pounds.Overall the quality of the construction and great design of the Ruffwear K9 Float Coat dog life jacket make this product our top pick. You will pay a little more but you’ll get a solidly built life vest that your dog will be comfortable swimming in for many years to come. That’s definitely worth paying for.
