If you want to try some organic, all-natural anti-itch remedies, I have listed some doggy foot bath recipes below that use natural herbs and organics to heal irritated skin and sooth inflamed tissue. These are easy-at-home remedies that even those with busy schedules can do.
For those who have dogs with environmental sensitivities, you can keep a bucket next to the front door to use after walks, fill the bathtub with warm water and the ingredients, or use a new kitty litter box as your foot bath to make it easier to wash all four paws — it all depends on the size of your dog and what works best for you. Putting booties on your dog will also prohibit paw exposure to environmental threats.
Here are some easy to do foot baths, or soaks, that can help relieve itchiness and help get the paw on route to healing. These can be done as a pre-emptive plan, or in conjunction with treatment from your vet, just consult with him first and have him help you find the one that will best fit your dog’s situation.
7 Soothing Foot Bath Recipes for Your Dog's Itchy Paws — Lists several options for foot baths that use organic, all-natural ingredients that help heal irritated skin and sooth inflamed tissueRemember: Never rinse your dog’s feet after any of these foot baths because the healing properties of each solution need to remain on the skin and hair to do their best work. Do not wrap your dog’s paw until it is completely dry. You may need to use a elizabethan collar or other collar to prevent your dog from licking until the healing is well underway and the habit of licking has stopped.
Other possibilities include putting a large plastic tub in your mud room or attached garage. Fill up the tub with water, then add iodine (found at most local pharmacies) until the water solution turns the color of iced tea. Some of my clients with giant breed dogs use a kid’s plastic swimming pool for foot baths, and some clients simply dunk their pets’ feet in a bowl….whatever works!
