If you're an art lover, you may have seen the Italian Greyhound in centuries-old portraits, immortalized with their noble owners by famous artists. This slender, elegant dog is the smallest of the sighthounds — the group of dogs bred to hunt by sight and give chase — and closely resembles his much larger Greyhound cousin.

They generally get along with other dogs, but prefer other Salukis, or at least other sighthounds. They won't chase small dogs or cats in their own household, but other animals, such as pet birds, mice, rabbits, or hamsters could prove too much of a temptation. However, when there are several tasks that are required to be done, then the Hound Dogs group themselves into small squads with a squad leader

- This smaller version of a hound, either 13 or 15 inches at the withers, has been popular for a long time. The modern breed was developed in Britain in the 1830s. They were bred as scent hounds and their trainability, stamina and excellent sense of smell make them invaluable in organizations today such as the Beagle Brigade, which uses Beagles to search for illegal contraband in airports. Their sweet, friendly personalities make them excellent family dogs. The is characterized by dogs with small size but strong personalities. They are perfect indoor and apartment dogs, though many of them are pure bundles of energy. In fact, don't make any assumptions about their small size. Many toys serve perfectly well as watchdogs because of their barking tendencies. Some toy dogs are just smaller versions of larger dogs which belong to other groups. Toy poodles, Miniature Pinschers and Italian Greyhounds represent this type of toy. Other toys don't have any clear correlates in larger groups. The Chihuahua and Chinese Crested are two such breeds. Not all hounds are large or medium-size canines. Some move relatively low to the ground. These include beagles, dachshunds and basset hounds. Beagles were bred for hunting rabbits, while basset hounds hunted various small game. Both types of quarry were hunted by people traveling on foot, rather than horseback. Dachshunds, whose name means "badger dogs" in the language of their native Germany, were developed to hunt that vicious varmint. While these breeds are among the most common types of hounds kept strictly as pets, owners can compete with their dogs in field trials. Rules vary according to the organization, but beagle and dachshund trials don't include shooting game, while basset hound trials might include gunning. The types of hound dogs are further distinguished by their breeds. Hound dogs vary greatly from the small and long Dachshund to the tall and lean Greyhound or the substantially-sized Irish Wolfhound. When choosing a hound dog as a pet, consider each breed independently as their personalities vary as much as their physiques. The isn't as well defined as some of the others. Many of the dogs in this group have recognizable ancestors in the hound, terrier, sporting and even working groups. Dogs in this group tend to be medium-small and they include such well known breeds as the Bulldog, Poodle and Boston Terrier. The is an exotic-looking breed who hails from the Andes. It is said thatSpanish conquistadors found these small- to medium-size sighthounds living amidst orchids in Incan homes and called them perrosflora, which means flower dogs. Her name in Quechua, the language of the Incas, translates to dog without vestments, or naked dog. The PIO comes in two coat varieties: hairless and coated. The hairless has smooth, suppleskin with a narrow patch of hair on top of her head, sort of like a mohawk. Shemay sometimes have a little fuzz on her forehead or sparse tufts of hair on herlower tail and feet. The coated variety has a singlecoat that can be short and smooth, long and curly or long and straight.
